From the article: "Kenya continues to make strides towards universal health coverage (UHC) as the nation prepares to transition from the UHC pilot programme into a national rollout of UHC. In readiness for the national rollout, Kenya’s Health NGOs Network – HENNET and Amref Health Africa have launched the Social Accountability Platform for Health. The platform will be led by HENNET to map and coordinate social accountability activities such as collecting and disseminating resources and tools on social accountability, holding the government accountable, as well as developing and implementing the platform’s roadmap. The platform will go a long way to ensure that civil society organisations (CSOs) are united and coordinated in the implementation of UHC at local and national levels and at the same time hold the government accountable to its promises as relates to UHC."
From the article: "Kenya equally has not got it right yet and the system still channels a lot of resources towards secondary and tertiary care and which is a problem. Dr. Githinji Gitahi, global CEO AMREF Health Africa and UHC 2030 says that out of the total wage bill, the expenditure that Counties in Kenya have and how much is going to secondary and tertiary care out of percentage going below is quite huge and thus governments should refocus. Speaking on Monday in Nairobi during a media briefing by the 24th Board meeting of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn and Child health, Dr. Gitahi said Health must happen at home first. “Health is made at home. Hospitals remain for repair when things go wrong and when we look at the entire health systems holistically bout 80 to 90 percent of children are born normal but the issue is how to sustain healthy lives through the course from birth and all the way,” he said. Dr. Gitahi noted that a lot of efforts therefore should stay through prevention and promotion considering issues such as FGM, Gender Based Violence, equity for women and also nutrition links towards promotion and prevention."
From the article: "The Health NGOs Network (HENNET), an umbrella organisation of 105 Kenyan health civil society organisations including Amref Health Africa in Kenya held a high-level meeting on 7 November 2019. The agenda of the meeting was to share a report on the UN UHC HLM from the Ministry of Health in Kenya. Many of the world’s nations among them Kenya, have committed to achieve Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. UHC is the access to safe, effective, quality and affordable essential health care. Through UHC, all individuals and communities can access the health care they require without suffering financial burden. The United Nations General Assembly held a UN UHC High-Level meeting on 23 September 2019 to mobilise the global community and secure political commitment from Heads of State and Governments to accelerate progress towards achieving UHC by 2030. During the meeting, primary health care (PHC) was recognised as essential to achieving UHC. PHC promotes quality, people-centred services with a focus on prevention and promotion. Participants at UN UHC HLM adopted the Political Declaration for UHC which calls for scale-up of competent, skilled and motivated health workers."
